Gale sail

I just took delivery of a Gale Sail storm jib, another innovative product from ATN Sailing Equipment, Inc.

This sail is intended as emergency equipment to keep the boat stable and steerable in a storm, say, to remain clear of a lee shore.  It is a very small 60 square-foot headsail constructed of heavy-weight dacron in safety orange.  It attaches with a sleeve around a rolled-up jib on the headstay roller furler.  This has the benefit of preventing the jib from unrolling in extreme conditions.

We would use the red spinnaker halyard (the lower one) to attach to the head of the sail, and the tack would be secured to the bow plate.  A second set of sheets for this sail would lead through the forward jib fairlead tracks and back to the primary winches.

It will be interesting to see this sail and practice rigging it!
