A series of instructional videos were filmed several years ago on board the Beneteau First 36.7 Gijima Kakhulu, produced by Will O'Haver. The boat is now christened Northern Light and is sailed and raced very successfully by the O'Haver family. Will is a sailor at Western Michigan Univ. and has sailed with us on Volant.
Entitled The racing boat crew - An instructional video series, the 6 segments focus on duties of some of the primary positions assigned on this Beneteau 36.7. They include:- Bowman (also known as Foredeck)
- Mastman (which I usually call Mid-deck)
- Cockpit (which I usually call Keys)
- Headsail trimmer
- Tailer
- Mainsail trimmer
The Beneteau 36.7 is a symmetrical spinnaker boat, so references to the spinnaker pole and guys are not relevant for us on Volant, but most of the content is applicable. The complexity of handling the spinnaker pole for symmetrical spinnaker sailing warrants 1 or 2 more crew members to race a 36.7 competitively compared to the 10R.
In each of these 6 videos, find a lot of guidance on technique and tips for each position and also for how they relate together. I have some disagreement about how to flake a halyard tail, who does what in some circumstances, and a few additional duties that are missed, but most of this content is relevant and very good!
I have in mind capturing some video of sailing operations on board Volant in a way that provides good instruction or review of duties for crew members. The actions with an asymmetrical spinnaker could be especially valuable. ACTION ITEM: We might need a volunteer videographer from among the crew to do a quality job!
